Dojo Kun
Dojo Maxims
These maxims are mottos — guiding principles that serious students of Karate should try to follow if they wish to gain the maximum from their training. They reflect an attitude and way of life, similar in spirit to English phrases like “Service not self”, “Deeds not words”, and “Be prepared.”
1. Reisetsu O Mamori
“Stick to the rules”
In the dojo, good etiquette must be observed by following the rules.
2. Shingi O Omanji
“A student must have loyalty to their instructor”
This is one of the most important values in martial arts.
In traditional Japanese martial arts, it is considered improper to change styles frequently — doing so can prevent a student from developing the correct etiquette and spirit.
3. Jojitsu Ni Oberezu
“Teachers and students are not all one”
Outside the dojo, you can be friendly with your Sensei — but do not take advantage of this friendship or familiarity.
4. Shinkenmi Ni Tesseyo
“Be serious in your efforts”
There should be no flippancy, chattering, smoking, chewing gum, eating, or drinking in the dojo.
Concentrate fully on your Karate. The dojo is not a social hall.
Both students and visitors are expected to respect the dojo’s rules and these maxims.
